The wage question in a photography business in 2027

Portrait studios pay photographers, assistants, digital techs, editors and studio managers on different evidence, so build each offer from local data.

What to take away

  • Pay seven roles, not onephotographer, assistant, digital tech, editor, album designer, studio manager and sales support.
  • The BLS national median is a floor for the photographer role only. Pull the state and metro rows for your market first.
  • Federal wage, overtime and recordkeeping duties start with the first hire. Hourly studio roles are almost always non-exempt, paid at time and a half past 40 hours.
  • The 2027 ranges below are the author's estimates for U.S. portrait markets, not a published survey.

This is operations and hiring guidance, not legal, tax or employment advice.

Seven roles, seven rates

Set a separate rate for each role, then price the skill differences and the work you hand over. Rates must also fit inside what the sessions earn, so the margin work on pricing photography services for a fair margin comes before any offer goes out. The bands below are planning estimates for a U.S. portrait studio in 2027.

The owner often covers all seven in one week. That is the trap: a photographer's rate will not hold an editor.

Turning the BLS median into a local offer

The Bureau of Labor Statistics page on photographers publishes one national median. It blends portrait studios with newspapers, e-commerce and freelance work, and separates no role from another.

Adjusting the BLS median

  • Pull state and metro figures
  • Adjust for studio-specific duties
  • Add weekend wedding premium
  • Add newborn session premium
  • Add school contract premium
  • State premiums in the offer

The same release carries state and metro wage tables. Read the 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles for your market. Typical state and metro medians run from $35,000 to $55,000 a year.

Four local sources build the offer:

  • the BLS state and metro row for your market
  • job postings with the same role title, collected over four weeks
  • two written quotes from freelancers in your niche
  • your own scored trial task

Local evidence sets the rate; the plan sets the ceiling. The write-up on photography business plan contents shows where labor cost sits against session revenue.

Overtime and exempt classification for hourly studio roles

The Labor Department guidance for new and small businesses lists employer duties on wages, overtime, timekeeping and records. They apply from the first hire, not the tenth.

Overtime and exempt classification

  1. Classify each role against the duties test. Assistants, digital techs, editors and album designers rarely qualify for exemption.
  2. Pay 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. A Saturday wedding plus prep and culling can push a part-time hire past that line.
  3. Record daily hours, the regular rate and overtime paid for each non-exempt employee.
  4. Recheck the salary threshold yearly. It has been $684 per week since 2020, after a 2024 increase was vacated in court.

The EEOC small business resource center covers nondiscrimination, accommodation requests and record retention. An ad for a young, energetic shooter reads differently to a regulator than to you.

If you also hire in Canada

Canada sets its own floor, and the province sets it. Ontario pays overtime after 44 hours a week, British Columbia after 40 in a week or 8 in a day. Vacation and statutory holiday pay come from the same provincial rules. Federal rules cover federally regulated employers only.

Register for GST/HST with the Canada Revenue Agency when you sell sessions or prints there. The guide on how to start a photography business without missing a required step covers registration on both sides of the border.

Example: pricing a second shooter for a wedding

Take the package fee the couple has accepted and work through the variables in order.

Pricing a second shooter

  1. Write the package fee down and subtract travel.
  2. Count on-site hours, travel and the editing hours the second shooter will carry.
  3. Set the share as a percentage, not a flat sum. Typical shares run 15 to 25 percent of the package fee.
  4. Repeat for a weekday newborn session and a two-hour headshot block.

A flat fee looks generous on a three-hour day and thin on a fourteen-hour one. The second shooter notices.

Trial task, role definition and the 90-day review

Give shortlisted candidates a real session file and a real client brief. Ask for a culled and graded gallery, or a twelve-spread album layout, and watch how they handle a back-focusing lens.

Write the role and the review date before the first shoot. The role fits on one page: what the person does alone, what they hand off, who they escalate to.

Review monthly: qualified applicants, offer acceptance, ninety-day retention and pay compression between new hires and long-serving staff.

References should answer questions about bad days: the reshoot, the lost card, the client who changed the order after printing. How to hire reliable staff for a photography business covers those calls.

Common questions

Can I just pay everyone the BLS median?
No. It covers one occupation, and a studio hires seven roles at seven local prices. Use it as a floor for the photographer role.
Should studio roles be hourly or salaried?
Pay assistants, digital techs, editors and album designers hourly. Salary works only where a role meets the duties test and the salary threshold.
When should the first pay review happen?
Ninety days, because that covers a full season of sessions and one ordering cycle.
What if the studio cannot match the local rate?
Change the role, not the number. Move the expensive hours to the person paid for them, and say what the job does not include.
