Canadian Photo Print Labs for Portraits: A Comparison
Photo print labs for photographers in Canada compared on CAD pricing, shipping times and duties, using Ontario and BC examples, plus paper quality and turnaround.
What to take away
- Canadian photo print labs for portraits quote in CAD and ship within Canada, so no brokerage fee or currency swing lands on the order.
- Named Canadian labs include Toronto Image Works, Pikto and Vistek in Ontario.
- The Lab Vancouver, London Drugs Photolab and Photo Central cover western Canada.
- A 16x20 inch lustre print runs roughly $18 to $45 CAD depending on the lab and paper, and prices move with volume.
- Ontario studios get next-day ground service from Toronto Image Works and Pikto; BC studios often wait two to four days from the same lab.
- Cross-border printing only makes sense for specialty surfaces, and duty plus GST/HST applies on the declared value.
- No lab covers color drift between your calibrated monitor and its printer, so a proof print stays your job.
The criteria that decide it
Four things separate Canadian portrait labs: color consistency across reorders, turnaround in business days, shipping cost to your province, and how the lab handles a damaged print.
Toronto Image Works, Pikto and Vistek publish rate cards in Ontario. The Lab Vancouver, London Drugs Photolab and Photo Central publish rate cards in the west. Paper choice and reprint rules vary more than headline price.

Option by option
Toronto Image Works and Pikto. Toronto Image Works at 80 Spadina Ave prints C-prints and inkjet on lustre, glossy and metallic papers. Pikto in the Distillery District handles fine art inkjet and framing. Both reach most Ontario addresses in one or two business days by ground courier, which suits a studio promising a print within a week.
Vistek. Vistek runs lab counters in Toronto, Mississauga and Ottawa in Ontario. It also has counters in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. It prints lustre, glossy and canvas, and a studio in Ottawa or London pays the same courier zone rate as one in Toronto. Turnaround for a 16x20 inch lustre typically runs two to five business days.
The Lab Vancouver and London Drugs Photolab. The Lab Vancouver on Powell Street covers BC and Alberta with C-prints, inkjet and fine art papers. London Drugs Photolab covers BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba with consumer-friendly lustre, glossy and canvas. Shipping to the Prairies runs three to five days. A Victoria studio adds a ferry leg, which can push a Friday order into the following week.
Photo Central. Photo Central in Winnipeg prints portraits, canvas and mounted wall art for Prairie studios. Ground shipping to Manitoba and Saskatchewan typically runs two to four days from Winnipeg, and to Ontario three to five days. It is a useful second account when an Ontario lab is busy.
Cross-border US labs. These win on specialty work: metallic papers, large canvas, and hand-finished framing that few Canadian labs offer. The trade-off is duty, GST/HST on the declared value, and a brokerage fee that some couriers charge flat. A $40 print can arrive with $20 in landed cost.
For studios that also sell digital files alongside prints, the tax treatment of each line differs, and US sales tax on portrait orders explains how the two are separated.
Where each one wins
Toronto Image Works and Pikto win on speed for Ontario, the country's biggest portrait market. A Mississauga studio ordering a 16x20 inch canvas on Monday can often hang it Thursday.
Vistek wins on counter access across six cities. The Lab Vancouver wins on paper selection and on serving western clients without a border crossing. A Kelowna photographer avoids the courier zone gaps that Ontario labs hit past Calgary.
London Drugs Photolab wins on walk-in convenience across BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Photo Central wins for Winnipeg and Prairie studios that want local pickup and mounting. US labs win on surfaces nobody here stocks, and on price for very large runs where the broker fee spreads across hundreds of prints.
A school portrait contract of 800 units can absorb the landed cost.
Where a studio sells albums and wall art together, the order flow resembles the structure in sample photography quotes and the template, which lists print sizes as separate line items.
Duties, GST and the paperwork
The Canada Border Services Agency assesses duty on the declared value of imported prints, and the Canada Revenue Agency expects GST/HST to be charged on taxable supplies you make in Canada. Check the current rate rules on the CRA page for GST/HST rates before you quote a client.
Cross-Border Paperwork Checklist
- Keep the commercial invoice with the shipment
- List line items, quantities and prices
- Check CRA GST/HST rate rules before quoting
- Expect duty on declared value from CBSA
- Confirm courier brokerage fee before ordering
Keep the commercial invoice with the shipment. Couriers release parcels faster when the invoice lists line items, quantities and prices, and the standard invoice fields are the same ones a lab expects on a reprint claim.
A landed-cost estimate that ignores brokerage is the most common way a cross-border print order loses money.
What none of them solve
No lab fixes a monitor that is not calibrated. Color that looks right on your screen and wrong in the box is your problem, not theirs, and every lab will say the same thing when you file a claim.
None of them guarantee a print matches a previous order months later. Paper batches shift, and a lab that changes its printer profile between orders will produce a visible difference on a wall where two prints hang side by side.
None of them handle client communication. The proof approval, the reprint request, and the delivery promise all sit with you. Building that sequence into your workflow is the subject of how a photography business keeps service quality honest.
- Confirm the lab quotes in CAD before you build a price list.
- Order one proof print on the exact paper before a client order.
- Ask for the reprint window in writing.
- Check whether the courier charges brokerage on cross-border parcels.
